Launch of Montreal Shelter for Victims of Elder Abuse

Published: 15 June 2011

On World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), June 15, SAVA Centre-Ouest is officially launching a 2-year pilot project aimed at offering support, information and accompaniment to victims of elder abuse, including a shelter that offers temporary housing.  This is one of the first projects of this kind in Canada.  This project is limited by geography  and will service seniors within the CSSS Cavendish territory (including NDG, Cote St-Luc, Hampstead, Montreal West and Snowdon West).

This project is a partnership of the Table de Concertation des Aînés de l’Île de Montréal (TCAIM), the NDG Community Committee on Elder Abuse (NDGCCEA) and a seniors’ residence (that functions as the SAVA Shelter, but remains anonymous for confidentiality and security reasons) and has been made possible by the generosity of a private Foundation.  For more information on NDGCCEA see their website.

In conjunction with the launch SAVA is holding a WEAAD event:

9 am - 12 noon: Alison Leaney, National Coordinator, National Initiative for the Care of the Elderly

Topic: Prevention, Detection and Intervention Tools for Elder Abuse

1:30 - 3:30 pm: Bill Haugland

Topic: The Changing Landscape of Aging Today

Location: Cummings Centre, 5700 Westbury Avenue, Montreal
