2012 Boughton / BCLI Great Debate
23 July 2012
By Alison Taylor
23 July 2012—Boughton Law Corporation and the British Columbia Law Institute are proud to host the annual GREATdebate on Thursday, October 25, 2012.
This year’s debate focuses on the contentious issue of the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) in British Columbia; though the tax’s fate has already been decided, this year’s resolution calls on debaters to make the case that the divisive tax should be retained.
Arguing for the resolution are Tony Wilson, Boughton, and Chris Thompson, creator of “FightFightHST – A Letter to Bill Vander Zalm“. Against are Michael Bain, Hamilton Howell Bain & Gould, and Emily Clough, Alexander Holburn Beaudin + Lang. The evening, to be hosted by CBC Radio One’s Rick Cluff, promises to be a fun, engaging evening of dinner and lighthearted debate. Held annually since 2008, the Great Debate pits some of the city’s best comic legal debaters in a classic legal – but mostly humorous – debate on substantive legal issues in a fiscal, not fistic, oratorical fight to the finish.
The cocktail reception will begin at 5:00 PM. The event will be held in Cafe Pacifica at the Pan Pacific Vancouver Hotel, 300 – 999 Canada Place. Tickets are available directly from the British Columbia Law Institute. Tickets cost $145 per person; tables of eight can be purchased for $1,100.
The 2012 Great Debate offers a great combined value: network with legal colleagues and the judiciary in a social setting, enjoy dinner and the debate, and earn one hour of CPD credit in commercial/tax, all for one reasonable price.
