    24 March 2009 On October 29th, 2008, Boughton Law Corporation and the BCLI jointly hosted the first annual Great Debate held at the Law Courts Inn, Vancouver. The event was organized to raise funds for the Institute’s law reform initiatives as well as the UBC Faculty of Law’s new building.   • BCLI Welcomes Executive Director of the Samoa Law Reform Commission

    23 March 2009 Recently appointed Samoa Law Reform Commission Executive Director, Ms. Leilani Tuala-Warren, spent two weeks with the BCLI in March 2009 as part of her fact-finding visit to Canada. The new Samoa Law Reform Commission was set up in November 2008 and Ms. Tuala-Warren was invited to spend some time with the BCLI to observe how we operate and carry out our law reform projects in British Columbia.  During her time at the Institute, Ms. Tuala-Warren was also able to attend the Federation of Law Reform Agencies of Canada Conference in Victoria, hosted by the BCLI.    Read More

  • BCLI Staff Lawyer takes to the Airwaves

    23 March 2009 Laura Watts, BCLI Staff Lawyer and National Director of the Canadian Centre for Elder Law, recently participated in the CBC radio show "On the Coast," hosted by Stephen Quinn. The show ran a series on homelessness entitled "No Fixed Address." Laura appeared on the show to discuss some of the issues faced by seniors who are either homeless or at the risk of becoming homeless, and to raise awareness of a new and promising pilot project that has been introduced by the BC Seniors Services Society to help seniors currently on the street find senior specific housing.    Read More

  • Canadian Lawyer Profiles Commercial Tenancy Act Reform Project

    23 March 2009 The March 2009 edition of Canadian Lawyer contains an article on the BCLI's Commercial Tenancy Act Reform Project. Entitled "A new lease on life for a moribund law," the article by Kevin Marron discusses the challenges of working with an Act described by one lawyer as "the Da Vinci Code of B.C. statutes."   • Continuing Legal Education Society of BC Hosts Elder Law 2009

    13 March 2009 On 1 May 2009, the Continuing Legal Education Society of BC is hosting Elder Law 2009. This course will address a diverse range of issues in the elder law field, including family law matters, health policy, estate planning, and powers of attorney. Two members of the BCLI's staff will be among the presenters. CCEL national director Laura Watts will give a presentation on assisted living and supportive housing in BC and Canada. BCLI staff lawyer Kevin Zakreski will discuss predatory lending.    Read More
