The Inclusive Investing Project was born out of a desire to enhance capacity within the investment sector to work with clients who may prefer to make decisions with the support of family and friends.

While most professionals are familiar with substitute-decision makers using a power of attorney or a guardianship appointment by the court or under legislation, supported decision-making relationships are generally less familiar. Supported decision-making allows adults to pick who may assist them in making decisions. Supported decision-making can enable people living with disabilities to make their own decisions about financial, personal, health care, legal, or other matters. For people living with dementia and cognitive disabilities, supported decision-making may open a door to maintaining a degree of autonomy in making decisions regarding their investments.

Presenter: Alison Wilkinson is a staff lawyer for the British Columbia Law Institute and the Canadian Centre for Elder Law.

Alison was born and raised in Kamloops, BC, in the heart of the interior. She obtained her B.A. in Psychology from the University of Victoria, and her J.D. from the University of British Columbia. She articled in Calgary, and thus was called to the Alberta Bar in 2013 and the British Columbia Bar in 2014.

After returning to BC, Alison took a position as in house counsel with a small business. This role provided for a unique prospective on the law and how it impacts end users. During this time, Alison also took the opportunity to obtain training in arbitration, mediation and coaching.  Additionally, Alison had the pleasure of acting as a sessional instructor on dispute resolution for the Faculty of Business at Thompson Rivers University. Following this, Alison worked as a family law lawyer with a firm in Kamloops.
