Kathleen Cunningham has advised the Board of the BC Law Institute that she will be stepping down as Executive Director at the end of May 2020 to pursue new opportunities. The Board wishes her well and thank her for her years of dedicated service.

Kathleen joined the BC Law Institute and Canadian Centre for Elder Law in June 2015 and helped to accomplish considerable work and progress. As Executive Director, Kathleen helped to raise BCLI’s profile within the access to justice sector and ensured BCLI’s presence within the law reform sector nationally and internationally.

Kathleen is grateful for the new relationships and friendships she has established with so many. Her tireless efforts have strengthened the organization’s operations and helped position BCLI to be able to ensure its participation in the opportunities ahead from access to justice to the ongoing evolution of how BCLI and CCEL carry out their independent, non-partisan law reform work. On behalf of the Board, we thank Kathleen for her commitment to ensuring an orderly transition in the coming months. The Board will announce its executive search early in the new year.

During my undergraduate degree, I did a minor in Gerontology. Throughout law school, I focused my research and writing on health care and older adults, including researching the laws surrounding restraint use in older adults in BC and Ontario, pension supports for caregivers of the elderly, and patient comprehension in the context of informed consent. My master’s thesis examined what legal supports existed for caregivers of the elderly in Canada and Australia. I used the lens of relational autonomy to analyze home care and caregiver supports and made policy recommendations for increasing supports for informal caregivers in Canada.

During my first week I will be attending the Reducing Elder Abuse in BC: Together in Action Conference. I am looking forward to spending the summer working with Krista James at the CCEL and the rest of the BCLI team.

The post Meet our new Legal Research Assistant first appeared on British Columbia Law Institute.
