ABOUT US

British Columbia Law Institute (BCLI) is BC’s independent law reform agency. We identify and undertake law reform projects in the public interest.

We work to modernize, simplify, and improve laws to better support people and communities across British Columbia. Our work is publicly available and serves a broad audience, including legal professionals, government, policymakers, advocates, and the wider public. Our approach combines rigorous legal research with extensive consultation and engagement.

In 2022, BCLI launched the Reconciling Crown Legal Frameworks Program to explore ways Crown legal frameworks need to adapt to strengthen relationships between Crown and Indigenous laws and areas of jurisdiction.

ABOUT THE POSITION

This is a full-time position based in British Columbia. The BCLI has offices at the Peter A. Allard School of Law on the unceded territories of the Musqueam (xwmәθkwәy̓әm), Squamish (Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw), and Tsleil-Waututh (Sәlílwi әtaʔ/Selilwitulh) peoples, and at Thompson Rivers University on the traditional and unceded territory of the Secwépemc peoples. BCLI has a hybrid work environment. Arrangements for remote work for candidates not based in the Lower Mainland are subject to the availability of a local BCLI-connected lawyer to support supervision, the ability of the candidate to travel periodically to BCLI offices, and approval by the Law Society of BC.

You will work as part of the BCLI team, conducting legal research, writing, and analysis in support of our projects. You will participate in consultations with stakeholders to support law and policy reform activities, engage with our partner organizations and colleagues. You will help produce content for our publications, including law reform reports, study papers, and public legal education tools.

This position is well suited to someone who possesses a strong interest in addressing fundamental legal and systemic issues, as well as promoting the development of better laws that benefit all individuals in British Columbia.
