The British Columbia Law Institute (BCLI) is BC’s independent, non-profit law reform agency. Previously the Law Reform Commission of BC, we have been working to improve and modernize the law in BC since 1997. Our work includes our Reconciling Crown Legal Frameworks Program which undertakes law reform, research and education to inform the Crown’s ability to enable legal pluralism and align with Indigenous legal frameworks. The successful candidate will have an interest in addressing fundamental legal and systemic issues for all British Columbians and implementing the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
ABOUT THE POSITION
The BCLI is a small team of legal professionals. Our projects develop just and innovative solutions, and increase access to justice through independent scholarly research, writing and educational tools for law reform. This is a full-time position. The BCLI has offices at the Peter A. Allard School of Law on the unceded territories of the Musqueam (xʷmәθkʷәy̓әm), Squamish (Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw), and Tsleil-Waututh (Sәlílwi әtaʔ/Selilwitulh) peoples. We also have offices at Thompson Rivers University Faculty of Law, on the traditional and unceded territory of the Secwépemc peoples. We can be flexible about a hybrid work arrangement, depending on location.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
You will work as part of the BCLI team under the direction of the BCLI Executive Director. The position involves:
- Conducting legal research, writing and analysis in support of ongoing BCLI law reform projects
- Managing and collaborating on law reform projects
- Consulting with stakeholders to support law and policy reform activities
- Producing content for publications, including law reform reports, study papers, and public legal education tools
- Producing articles for our blog and other publications to promote our work
- Developing project plans, project schedules and helping to identify funding
- Undertaking public communications and outreach in support of our projects
- Supervising interns, co-op, and summer students
The early focus of this position will primarily be on social policy, human rights, housing and law reform related to land tenure and disaster response frameworks. Future workload will depend on funding and organizational needs.
QUALIFICATIONS
In addition to being a member of the Law Society of BC, candidates should be prepared to demonstrate the following:
- A minimum of three years’ experience as a practising lawyer
- Outstanding legal research and writing skills with the ability to manage extensive comparative research (both national and international)
- Strong ability to identify policy issues and explain options for how the law should change
- Experience in developing and giving presentations on law reform topics to a range of audiences, both online and in-person
- Interpersonal, communication and problem-solving skills
- Willingness to consider respectfully many points of view
- Developing skills as a group-facilitator and public speaker
- Demonstrating or developing skills related to project management
The following skills and experiences would be an asset in this role:
- Fluency in French or other languages
- Experience developing educational resources or public legal education learning tools (print, video, online)
- Training in qualitative or quantitative research
- Ability to apply a gender-based analysis + and cultural safety and humility to research and writing

SALARY AND BENEFITS
BCLI offers a generous benefits and vacation package. The salary range for this position is $83,000 to $120,000 based on year of call.
