The British Columbia Law Institute (BCLI) is pleased to announce the appointment of its new Executive Director, Karen Campbell, effective September 8, 2020.

Karen Campbell brings over 20 years of experience practicing public interest law in British Columbia – most of which has involved law reform and advocacy for strengthened legal tools. Her work has consistently been designed to address access to justice issues, using both Indigenous and Crown legal frameworks. In her previous positions, Ms. Campbell has forged effective relationships with a broad range of stakeholders, developed creative approaches to legal challenges and contributed to both federal and provincial law reform initiatives. She holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from Dalhousie University and a Masters in Law from the University of London, England.

Karen Campbell will work with the BCLI Board of Directors to advance BCLI’s and CCEL’s missions, to improve and modernize the law, and to increase access to justice. Under Karen’s leadership, BCLI will continue its independent and excellence-driven research, expand community engagement, and drive innovation to improve access to justice, support of older adults, and a broad range of laws. Through her collaboration with government and key provincial and national stakeholders, Karen will support BCLI to address fundamental legal and systemic issues, and to develop just and innovative solutions towards a better future for Canada’s aging population and for all British Columbians.

“I am thrilled to be joining BCLI and look forward to working with the staff, board and BCLI community to continue the organization’s important work.” – Karen Campbell

“My five years with the BCLI and CCEL have been rewarding professionally and personally. I will miss the many people I have had the privilege of meeting and working with. As Karen and I begin our transition later this month and into early September, I hope to introduce her to many of our funders and stakeholders” – Kathleen Cunningham

“The board looks forward to working with Ms. Campbell as she brings her wide range of experience to the leadership of BCLI and CCEL. On behalf of the BCLI Board and staff, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Kathleen Cunningham, the outgoing Executive Director, for her tireless service and dedication to this organization.” – Tom Spraggs, BCLI Board Chair
