Final Reflections on My Summer with BCLI and CCEL

BY Allison Curley

As I wrap up some of the final items on my task list today, I’ve been reflecting on my summer and how much I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to work with the BCLI and CCEL team. My initial thought: “what a terrific opportunity this has been for me!”

I’ve always been interested in law reform. I often think, “how does this law really affect people? How does that law operate on the ground?” This summer, I had the opportunity to consider how law affects people in their day-to-day lives. Everyday, I was able to reflect on how law can be developed or changed so that it is better suited to people just like you and me.

This summer, I developed a better understanding of how important law reform is. The issues that people face in their day-to-day lives are dynamic, and ever changing. For this reason, the law must become dynamic too. Law reform is necessary for the law to be responsive to the needs of people, and law reform requires dedicated, passionate, and curious thinkers. I would describe all of my colleagues at BCLI and CCEL as dedicated, passionate, and curious.

Members of the BCLI/CCEL team have continuously provided me with the support I need to think with a “law reform lens.” They’ve given me constructive feedback on my legal research and writing so that I can improve the way in which I communicate my ideas. I have so much gratitude for the BCLI/CCEL team. They say to try and learn something new everyday—well, I’ve definitely met my quota this summer, and then some!

In summary, I’ve had a great summer, and I’ve learned a lot. I am looking forward to crossing paths with members of the BCLI/CCEL team in the future. Thank you BCLI/CCEL!
