A word from our Executive Director

This month we say goodbye to our summer student, Meghan Little. Meghan worked on researching and drafting primers for our Reconciling Crown Legal Frameworks Program. We are grateful to the public interest fellowship program at U of T Law for supporting her work with us and we wish her the best in her second year of law school.

Reconciling Crown Legal Frameworks (RCLF) Program

The BCLI has now released two primers as part of our RCLF Program:

  1. Reconciliation Primer 1 “The UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act and BC’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act” introduces the BC Declaration Act and its implications for BC legislation. It discusses how the BC Declaration Act (passed in 2019), affirms that the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples applies to the laws of BC.
  2. Reconciliation Primer 2 “Indigenous Laws” is a collaborative publication with the Indigenous Law Research Unit at the University of Victoria. It provides an overview of Indigenous laws, their sources and how they operate.

These are the first in a series of primers aimed at providing information on law reform issues related to BC’s adoption of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act

AI and Civil Liability Project

Our Consultation Paper on Artificial Intelligence and Civil Liability, which proposes draft recommendations to modernize tort law to deal with the challenges of AI, remains open for comment until October 1st, 2023.
